Carl Jung, the pioneer of analytical psychology, once said, “I am not what happened to me. I am what I choose to become.” That simple quote illustrates the attitude one must adopt in order to truly welcome any kind of internal balance, and once your inner world is in order, the outside will soon begin to follow through, or so it is said.
The question of the hour is “What is anxiety?”
I’m going to give you an answer you’ve probably not heard before. Anxiety, simply put, is a blessing. (“A blessing?? How??”) It’s a blessing because those who deal with this terrible affliction are potentially on journeys of self-understanding to make sense of what’s happening to them. And once on the right path, this continuous search for stillness can go beyond just curing the disease and into enhancing life in ways the normal people don’t usually look into.
So yes, anxiety can be beaten. Now to address the former question again, more conventionally. What is anxiety?
Anxiety refers to that group of emotions one persistently feels that trigger unreasonable reactions of unease, distress, or discomfort. In fact, it’s something common to all human beings, and in some cases, it’s actually useful as it makes the person more alert and aware, but with those who experience it beyond a reasonable threshold, there is a problem, which can be considered a ‘disorder’. Don’t be alarmed by that word. A ‘dis-order’ simply means that things aren’t in order, and work needs to be done to straighten it out.
There are numerous types of anxiety disorders. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Panic Disorder (PD), Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), etc, I’m not going to discuss all of them here, but they all have a few things in common at their core, and that’s what this website aims at addressing.
If you are someone who deals with anxiety, and are looking for a way through, the first step is going to be the hardest, which is telling yourself you CAN do this and you WILL overcome, because the symptoms of anxiety can be all consuming. They can affect the very way you think itself. It’s like being faced with a force so powerful, even the idea of a life cured of this monster seems far-fetched. You MUST believe me when I tell you it is possible. Just take the first step, and it gets easier from there.
I’m going to be honest with you, there might be times where you try and fail. You might feel the hands of anxiety delivery hard blows right at you. Just know that every step in the direction towards progress builds a stronger and more well equipped you, and in all your attempts to better yourself, you will be picking things up from where you left off. Not from the beginning again.
Power through.
Another thing you will have to keep in mind is, you must not worry about the timeline when you’re feeling like your old self again, because deep down, you are your old self, and will always be, even when you destroy your anxiety, even when it becomes ancient history. Don’t tell yourself “It’s been two months and I still don’t feel alright”. Healing is subjective. It will happen at your own time, and you will know when.
This website isn’t just about the treatment of an illness. It’s about the art of getting better, and getting better doesn’t stop. You constantly develop. I’m just giving you the tools you need in your own journey through life’s many showdowns. The bad news is that there are going to be challenges. The good news is there are going to be challenges. It’s how you see the world and yourself, and the worlds inside yourself. You chose to read this article. This was a real step in the right direction. Congratulate yourself.
